¿Cómo salvar la consolidación democrática macedonia y la ampliación de la UE?

La ampliación de la Unión Europea (UE) está amenazada. Hay poco entusiasmo entre los Estados miembros europeos por ampliar aún más la Unión. La ralentización del proceso de integración de la UE en los Balcanes Occidentales se ha visto acompañada por una desaceleración de la inversión en la región por parte de los Estados miembros de la UE. El lento proceso de ampliación ha afectado negativamente a la percepción de los ciudadanos en la región. En los Balcanes Occidentales las tendencias populistas y autoritarias han crecido. Macedonia es el ejemplo de estos procesos. Nuevas potencias regionales, como Turquía, Rusia y China, amenazan con utilizar el estancamiento en el proceso de ampliación de la UE. Es necesario mejorar la consolidación democrática en los Balcanes Occidentales y en la UE para ayudar al proceso. La consolidación de la democracia en la región depende del consenso y la cooperación de las élites, así como de la remodelación de las instituciones públicas claves, para que sean poderosas e independientes de las influencias partidistas. El caso de Macedonia es importante considerarlo ya que este país ha sido durante mucho tiempo candidato a la adhesión a la UE sin poder iniciar negociaciones. Unas reformas duras y la asistencia europea son necesarias para dinamizar el proceso de democratización en Macedonia y avanzar en la agenda de la ampliación
