Comunidades romaníes en los Balcanes: historia e identidad

Los procesos de desarrollo de la identidad y los cambios de identidad en las comunidades romaníes que viven en los Balcanes, observados hoy en día, tienen sus viejas raíces históricas. Estos procesos están documentados ya en la época del Imperio otomano, y adquirieron nuevas dimensiones y trayectorias en los nuevos estados independientes, y hoy en un contexto pos-socialista, su controvertido desarrollo se activa una vez más. Las principales tendencias en el desarrollo de la identidad entre los gitanos en los Balcanes se pueden resumir de la siguiente manera: a) desarrollo interno de la comunidad; b) desarrollo de la comunidad como parte de la nación respectiva; c) desarrollo de la identidad étnica preferida; d) la construcción de una nueva identidad étnica. Estas tendencias se cruzan constantemente, se mueven de una a otra, a veces incluso van en dirección inversa. Están influenciadas por una serie de factores "externos" relacionados con la situación específica en la región y en cada uno de los países, enmarcados por circunstancias históricas y geopolíticas, y hoy en día también por los procesos comunes de integración paneuropea y globalización. Los procesos de desarrollo de la identidad y cambio de identidad en las comunidades gitanas fluyen constantemente y es imposible predecir ahora qué dirección adquirirán en un futuro más próximo o lejano.
