The influence of the dissolution of Yugoslavia by war on regional cooperation in Southeast Europe and the Balkans

In the early 1990s, the crisis of the Yugoslav state gave rise to a series of armed conflicts and the war interrupted all the activities initiated at the Ministerial Conference on Multilateral Cooperation in the Balkans (held in 1988 in Belgrade). The causes of the war had important endogenous factors: centralization after an old, more decentralized model gave arguments in favor of the nationalist policy of the leaders and, unfortunately, of a part of the leadership in the federal units. But without initiation or support from outside, the dissolution would have been possible without wars, not even the federal State would have collapsed. The article gives a brief historical overview, as well as a summary of the current situation and the problems that continue to disturb the development of greater multilateral cooperation in the region. Finally, the European Union (EU) strategy for the Danube region is presented as a promising regional cooperation for the future.
