The Dayton peace agreements, the Ohrid framework agreement, and the question of the final status of Kosovo: three examples of the contradictory intervention of the international community in the Balkan conflicts

Among the numerous consequences of the five long centuries of Turkish domination in southeastern Europe is, very notably, the presence in this part of the continent of important Muslim communities, some arriving in Europe on the occasion of Turkish military expansion, others –the majority– a consequence of the conversion to Islam of indigenous peoples of the Balkan Peninsula. We are referring, in reverse order to their numerical relevance, to the Muslims of Sandzak, the mountainous territory on which the northern half of the border between Serbia and Montenegro runs; to the gypsy communities –traditional, but not exclusively of the Muslim religion– scattered throughout the Balkan Peninsula; 2 to the Turkish minorities settled in the east of present-day Bulgaria and in various centers of Macedonia; to the Bosniacs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, spread throughout almost the entire territory of the country, although the majority is especially in the center, east, and extreme north-west of it; and above all to the Albanians, the majority in Albania and a large part of Kosovo, but also relevant in the adjacent territories of northwest Macedonia and southern Montenegro.
