Brčko district: an uncertain future

On May 23, 2012, both the Peace Implementation Council (CAP); as the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH), Valentin Inzko, and the Deputy Principal High Representative and Supervisor of the Brčko District, Roderick W. Moore, announced the closure of the Office of the High Representative in the District, officially planned, for August 31 of this year. According to the Office, the achievements made in the last 15 years invited optimism. It was time to let the political and administrative leaders, as well as the citizens of the enclave, walk alone.
Faced with such a statement, there were even those who imagined that we were facing a historic and extraordinary event: the beginning of the end of international tutelage in BH. However, from this statement, as well as from subsequent comments from the same protagonists, a transcendental element was extracted: it was not a termination, but a suspension, with all that this entails.
This article aims to analyze both the historical context, as well as the chronology and evolution of the special status that has governed the so-called Brčko District in recent decades.
